Opt out of display.
Providers can ask FindMyNPI to suppress their record from display. Here is exactly what opting out does, what it can't change, and the steps to request it.
If you are a healthcare provider listed on FindMyNPI and you would prefer not to appear in this directory, we will remove your record. This page describes how that works.
Who can opt out
Any individual provider (NPI Type 1) can opt their personal record out at any time, for any reason, with no documentation required. Authorised representatives of healthcare organisations (NPI Type 2) can opt the organisation's record out subject to the verification described below.
What gets removed
When we receive a verified opt-out request we suppress the entire record from the site within forty-eight hours. The provider page at /p/[your-npi] will return a 410 Gone response, the record is excluded from index pages and sitemaps, the provider does not appear in related-provider links from other pages, and the JSON API endpoint at /api/v1/npi/[your-npi] returns a 410 as well. Suppression persists across monthly data refreshes: the record will not reappear when CMS publishes a new dissemination file.
What does not change
Opting out of FindMyNPI does not affect your underlying NPPES record. Your NPI remains active, your record remains visible on the official CMS Registry at npiregistry.cms.hhs.gov, and other directory sites that mirror the NPPES public dataset are unaffected. To remove your record entirely you would need to deactivate your NPI through CMS, which has implications for your ability to bill Medicare, Medicaid, and most private payers; we cannot do that on your behalf.
How to request removal
Send an opt-out request to optout@findmynpi.com. Include the following information:
- The 10-digit NPI number of the record you wish to suppress.
- A statement that you are the provider (Type 1) or an authorised representative of the organisation (Type 2).
- For Type 1 requests, send the email from the address listed on your NPPES record, OR include a callback phone number that matches the practice phone listed on NPPES so we can verify by voice.
- For Type 2 requests, include a brief statement of your role and either an email from the authorised official's address as listed on NPPES, or a callback to the practice phone.
We do not require notarised letters, signed forms, or any other formal documentation. The verification step exists only to prevent malicious third parties from suppressing competitor records.
How long it takes
Most requests are processed within twenty-four hours and almost all within forty-eight. If verification fails we will reply explaining what additional confirmation is needed. We do not maintain a wait-list, escalation tier, or paid expedited service.
Reinstatement
If you change your mind, send a reinstatement request from the same verified channel and we will lift the suppression at the next monthly refresh.
Bulk requests, takedown threats, and adversarial requests
We will process opt-out requests for multiple NPIs from the same verified channel as a single batch. We will not act on requests from intermediaries claiming to represent providers without independent verification, and we will not process opt-out requests that appear to be retaliatory, fraudulent, or designed to obscure regulatory action against the provider. We reserve the right to publish anonymised aggregates of takedown patterns if a coordinated abuse campaign is detected.
